5 Conditions that Can Change your Personality

Disorders that alter personality: A trait acquired over time that remains with a person is called personality. Thoughts lead to actions; actions lead to habits; habits lead to character; and character leads to personality. Personality is about how you think, feel, and act. Action is your reaction to the world around you. The personality you have built over the years helps you deal with the world around you. Even as your moods change and you learn to deal with them, you still have a certain amount of “you” in you. But, this unique quality of you could be at stake due to some conditions. Let’s take a look at the disorders that alter personality.

Traumatic brain injury

You may have seen someone behaving abnormally after surviving a fatal fall or traumatic brain injury or other serious accident or trauma. Sometimes the changes are not spontaneous, but develop over a long period of time – and in some cases the personality changes are subtle and not entirely understandable. However, in some survivors of fatal injuries and accidents, the personality changes are very noticeable and obvious – meaning that the person may be a very different person.

Stroke

Among the diseases that change personality, stroke is one of them. It can dramatically change a person’s personality. Much depends on the parts of the brain that are affected by the stroke, and also on the duration of the stroke and the part of the body that is affected. If a person is disabled after a stroke and can no longer move some parts of the body, such as the hands or legs or both, the person may become anxious, nervous and less confident than before. The person may become irritable, impulsive with severe mood swings, and may easily lose his or her temper. This is how personality changes after being affected by a stroke.

Alzheimer’s disease

Alzheimer’s disease can change your personality – yes, this is true. Although the disease is known to affect memory, judgment, thinking and decision-making, it can also affect the way you think and act. The affected person remains confused and can easily become upset. The thought process, habits, and actions can change, leading to personality changes; for example, a sober and easygoing person can become picky, demanding, and opinionated – and sometimes the opposite can happen; so an anxious and stressful person can become peaceful, less anxious, content, and easygoing.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD).

This type of disorder is often abbreviated by psychiatrists as OCD. The person suffering from this type of disorder has a constant feeling of worry, nervousness and anxiety – with a repetitive urge to do certain things triggered by thoughts on a regular basis. As a result, the person performs some actions over and over again to fulfill this urge – and the next symptom is that the person doubts himself/herself a lot and is not able to do a simple task quickly and needs more time to complete the task. The person with this condition may feel anxious when someone criticizes them as anxiety increases.

Depression

Depression can occur at any age and affects every aspect of your life. Depression is a very serious mental illness that not only changes your mood, but also affects many other things in your life, such as your sleep, memory, activities, critical thinking, cognitive skills, and decision-making ability. A depressed person always remains isolated and reacts abnormally to the world around them. A depressed person’s personality gradually changes as the person may become too sad, emotional, anxious, frustrated, irritable, and angry.
