What is New with the Narrator in Windows 10?

Windows 10 v1903 offers a lot of improvements, and the narrator has a set of features that can help those who use Ease of Access. In this publication, we look at all the new features in Narrator in Windows 10.

New features in Narrator in Windows 10

Although I’m sure the list covers most of the new features, I’m sure there are many small changes that the narrator uses only daily. Here is the list:

  1. Narrator Startup Options
  2. Change how much content you hear
  3. Change what you hear when typing
  4. Read and navigate between sentences
  5. Additional Improvements

I can say one thing about the narrator’s changes. Microsoft has made it less disturbing and you can filter out a lot of things that cause distraction.

1] Narrator Startup Options

Windows Tips

Starting with Windows 10 v1903, you’ll notice these two options:

  • Show Narrator Home when the Narrator starts
  • Minimize Narrator Home to the System tray

If you’re familiar with Narrator, deselect the “Zoom out of Reader Home” option. This will reduce it to the system tray.

2 Change what you hear when reading and interacting

This section lets you control how much text you specify per year. There are five new verbal levels:

  • Text only
  • Some control details
  • All control details
  • Some text details
  • All text details

You can move between all levels using the Narrator + V command. Within this section, you have two options, either new or reordered. Includes options for

  • Voice emphasize formatted text
  • Have the Narrator use punctuation to determine pauses when reading.
  • Hear advanced detail, like help text, on buttons and other controls option

3 Change what you hear when typing

The narrator also works when writing. However, carefully choosing another would be a burden. The settings provide separate options for the following. You will hear:

  • Letters, numbers, and punctuation as you type.
  • Words as you type
  • Function keys as you type.
  • Arrow, Tab, and other navigation keys as you type.
  • When you toggle keys like Caps lock and Num lock are turned on or off.
  • Shift, Alt, and other modifier keys as you type.

There is a specific option to lock caps. It can warn you every time you run it. It is useful if you run it by mistake.

4Read and navigate between sentences

The V1903 ensures that you can easily hear each sentence, and if you miss, you can navigate through them using keyboard shortcuts.

  • Caps + Ctrl + . = Next sentence
  • Caps + Ctrl + , = Current sentence
  • Caps + Ctrl + M = Previous sentence

5Additional Improvements

  • The narrator stays on if you forget your PIN or Password, and help you reset.
  • The narrator can detect and speak the combo edit.
  • The phonetics are no longer announced. You will have to  Narrator key + Comma twice quickly command to hear the phonetics.
  • Supports BRLTTY version 5.6
